Explore Baltimore: Hipster Jazz Night

What: Hipster Jazz Night

Where: Joe Squared, 33 W North Ave

When: Sunday, March 19th, 8pm

Sick of all that old, mainstream jazz that everybody has heard of? Then come out to Joe Squared and check out some new jazz artists at Hipster Jazz Night! At least three new jazz artists will be playing their hip music for you to discover. The Ephemera Quartet is one of those groups. The local jazz group explores the jazz of composer Liam Hurlbut, combining it with pop and jazz from the 70’s to create their own unique sound. But this great event is not limited to the underground jazz of Baltimore. The Beautiful Mess, a New York based jazz artist will be bringing his experience on the trombone to Joe Squared to perform his hipster sounds. These two artists, in addition to some more groups, will having you tapping your feet to the sound of new, more exciting jazz. Oh! And make sure to grab you sax or kazoo for the chance of an impromptu jam session to end the fabulous night!

Explore Baltimore: Rock ‘N’ Flow

Where: Rams Head Live, 20 Market Pl

When: Saturday March 4th, 6:30pm-9pm

There are two types of people: those that clear their head with music and those who clear there head through meditation. Rams Head Live says why not both!? The second ever Rock ‘N’ Flow Yoga offers a mix of power yoga and a musical experience for an experience like no other concert venue has ever created. Enjoy a full on concert experience complete with great songs and cool lights while exercising your body and your mind. Music will be played by Mickey Coviello & The Herd Brothers while the yoga is led by M. Power Studio instructors, Dani Yarusso and Meaghan McDermott. Rock ‘N’ Flow will include challenging yoga exercises focused on breath work and meditation, which when combined with the awesome music while have you destressed and relaxed in no time. Get your tickets in advanced here and make sure to wear your favorite concert tee to this unique workout.

Explore Baltimore: Vegan Weekend

What: Baltimore Vegan Weekend

When: February 17th (7am)-19th (9pm)

Where: All over Baltimore!

Make this weekend all about food, fun and Veganism! With events all weekend all over the city, vegans and food lovers alike will want to get a piece of this event. Kick the weekend off with Friday’s Vegan Food Crawl in which restaurants throughout Baltimore are participating. Head to Hampden to grab some vegan pizza at Paulie Gee’s and then over to Rocket to Venus for some specialty vegan sandwiches. Or go to Fells Point for some vegan ice cream at Pitango Gelato and vegan Asian fusion at Ekiben. You can check out all the participating restaurants here.

Make sure not to fill up too much though, because Saturday is the Second Annual Vegan Mac and Cheese Smackdown. Hosted from 3pm-7pm at Baltimore City Community College, there will be over 30 different versions of this classic dish for your vegan taste buds to try and then vote on.

To close off the weekend, enjoy a Baltimore Vegan Brunch at any of these participating restaurants. Whether you’re in the mood for sausage, scrambled eggs, waffles, or crepes one of these fine restaurants will have it for you. Well the vegan version, but equally delicious version. With all this great vegan food, after Baltimore’s Vegan Weekend, you’ll be stuffed, happy, and healthy.

Are you ready for the most hipster thing you can think of? Well, it’s Baby’s on Fire, a record shop and cafe all in one restored Mt. Vernon carriage house.  Started by the married musicians David Koslowski and Shirlé Hale-Koslowski, the goal of Baby’s on Fire is to offer up a fun, cozy space for any Baltimorean to hang out, enjoy some food and some music. Whenever you pop in, there will most likely be a record on that David picked out himself and tons of records for you to look through and buy for yourself. (more…)

Explore Baltimore: Frozen Harbor Music Fest

When: February 17th and 18th

The annual Frozen Harbor Music Festival is back this year for 2 days and with 140 acts! Including 9 stages like Rams Head Live!, Baltimore Soundstage,  and Angel’s Rock Bar, this local music fest is worth the frostbite of February. Awesome local artists like Onyx and Pasadena will be performing, as well as WLOY favorites like Skribe and Breakforth. Friday and Saturday both have some amazing acts planned, so get your ticket to both days, or buy a ticket for the warmer day here. No matter what your music taste is, there will definitely some bands out of the 140 for you, so hurry up and get your tickets, and maybe a new scarf to keep you warm.

Celebrate your Valentine’s Day with the romantic sounds of Beyonce, Jay-Z, and Kanye. Okay, so maybe “Heartless” and “Lemonade” don’t exactly scream Valentine’s Day, but DJ Mills’ mix of these three hot artists will have you feeling some type of way. Playing the classics like Drunk in Love and Izzo, you’ll be dancing all night long. But don’t worry, DJ Mills will be throwing in the slow jams too for you and your significant other. So stop by The Ottobar so you and your bae can get in that Bey and Jay V-day spirit.

Explore Baltimore: Lunar New Year Celebration

Join the Women’s Committee of the Walters Art Museum to celebrate the Chinese New Year. The Walters Art Museum is ringing in the Year of the Rooster with some fun art activities and traditional Lunar New Year performances. These authentic performances include ones by Baltimore Chinese School, the Johns Hopkins Lion Dance Troupe, Sang Hee Ju Traditional Dance Company, and Stepping Stones. All these groups will perform various dances representing various traditions in various cultures. With all this celebration, the Walters Art Museum’s Lunar New Year will makes sure the Year of the Rooster is a good one!

Explore Baltimore: 2000’s Indie Dance Party

Come help The Ottobar celebrate their 10th anniversary on North Howard Street with a fun night of indie throwbacks! DJ’s Matt Walter and Craig Boarman will be making sure to spin the sweet indie hits from old favorites like Franz Ferdinand, The Strokes, and Pheonix. These awesome old hits not enough? The Ottobar will also play those who graced their stage and some great hits from artists like The Cure and Outkast. With songs from all these great 2000’s artists, this night isn’t just cool, it’s ice cold. So throw on some straight leg jeans and a pastel band tee, grab your ticket, dance, and try not to cry to that Death Cab for Cutie song.

Explore Baltimore: Miracle on 34th Street

The Miracle on 34th Street light display has been putting Baltimore in the Christmas spirit for years and the home owners on the street continue that tradition this year. Stop by any time between now and December 31st to see the unique and quirky lights all down the street that capture the Baltimore and Christmas spirit.

Come warm your stomach while looking at lights this holiday season with Hot Cocoa and Cookies on December 15th. Kitties and Pitties will be volunteering and handing out hot chocolate and cookies to help celebrate the great festivities. Be sure to stop by and donate to them during the season of giving and get so tasty treats for yourself!

If you’re on the lookup for where to get some great Christmas gift, look no further. This Sunday, Mount Vernon marketplace will be hosting a Holistic Holiday Pop-Up Market for all your holiday needs. With both guest vendors and permanent vendors, there will be plenty to  shop from. Vendors like Pure Chocolate by Jinji and Wild Yam Pottery will be at this event,  promoting fun, healthy, local gifts for this holiday season. While you’re here, grab some lunch too at one of the many permanent restaurants located in the Marketplace, like Mina’s Crepes, Pinch Dumplings, or The Local Oyster. With food, friends, shopping and fun, Mount Vernon Marketplace is definitely creating a holistic experience with this Holiday Market!
