New Releases 1/22/12

Monday, January 30th, 2012 by Kaitlyn Connaughton

Co-produced with Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon, Canadian singer Kathleen Edwards’ Voyageur brings a unique blend of musical and lyrical sound spanning influences from folk to pop, a recent heartbreak, and a new relationship. On Voyageur, Edwards’ lyrics and instrumentals offer a very different feel from her three previous studio albums while evoking a similar sound to artists including She & Him and Florence + The Machine. Other new releases include Factories’ Together, channeling the electropop sound of M83 and Foster The People, and We Are The Ocean’s Go Now and Live, likened to pop-rock bands like Blink 182. Additionally, Capsula, a punk rock band from Buenos Aires, has released their highly anticipated album In The Land of Silver Souls in North America. Similar to their 2009 release, Rising Mountains, Capsula’s latest album brings listeners back to the great garage band influences of the past and popular artists like The Black Keys. Alt-indie bands The Milkman’s Union and The Wheel Workers have also recently released Roads In and Unite respectively with a sound similar to the two-man band, Girls. (more…)

Graffiti6: Free EP

Thursday, October 27th, 2011 by Kevin Chadwick

The soulful sound of the English group, Graffiti6, formed two years ago when band mates, Jamie Scott and UK producer, TommyD, picked up their guitars and produced their first EP, Stone In My Heart. Since then the band has been picked up by Capitol Records and are said to have their first album, Colours, on its way toward release. Graffiti6’s Free EP serves as an inside look to what the public can expect to hear more of on Colours.

Free EP, although only seven tracks, is full of energy and soul. Driven strongly by acoustic guitars and vocal harmonies, Graffiti6 is reminiscent of early Fleet Foxes material. Much to my surprise, the second to last track is actually a cover of an earlier Fleet Foxes song, “Blue Ridge Mountains.” The band speeds up the tempo and definitely adds their soul and own flavor to the already beautifully written song. It ranks up there with First Aid Kit for “best Fleet Foxes cover.” (more…)
